Those looking for a 4x4 capable of decent performance and benefitting from a stylish interior could be tempted by the Cadillac SRX 3.0 Elegance. The range of internal features is high and this means the model is likely to be an attractive proposition. However, with high carbon emissions and a high purchase price this is far from an economical vehicle.

PROS:  Vast selection of internal features, decent power output, impressive performance credentials, handsome exterior

CONS:  Hefty carbon emissions, high running costs, high purchase price

Behind the Wheel

With a power output of 270bhp at 7000 rpm and torque figures of 222lb-ft at 3200 pm, the Cadillac SRX 3.0 Elegance delivers an impressive top speed and acceleration figures considering its size and weight.

The V6 engine is capable of pushing the 4x4 to a top speed of 131mph, something which the V8 engine of the Cadillac Escalade is unable to match. Acceleration is also fairly rapid with the SRX 3.0 Elegance hitting 62 mph range in 8.4 seconds.

Noise disturbance when driving is rarely a problem as the cabin is largely void of unwanted sounds. The large engine is hushed and this helps to improve driver and passenger comfort.

Looks & Equipment

One of the biggest advantages of this vehicle is that the standard of internal equipment is high. Everything from central locking and power steering to an advanced stereo system with MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth connectivity are provided as standard features, ensuring that the car’s cabin is both comfortable and practical.

In terms of comfort and appearance, a metallic paint finish and alloy wheels are standard additions whilst the interior comes with leather seats. Stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, an alarm and an immobiliser are also provided as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The standard additions of stability control and cruise control help to keep the car safe on the road and are combined with other great safety features such as driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard.

An alarm and immobiliser are also fitted to protect the vehicle from thieves.

With a five seat capacity, this Cadillac lacks some of the additional space offered by rival 4x4s. Of course, not everyone requires additional seating and Cadillac’s seven-seater Escalade caters to that crowd anyway.

As a five seater car the Cadillac SRX performs well and cabin space is impressive. The boot offers an impressive 537 litres with the seats up and a total of 1,548 litres with the rear seats down.

Value for Money

Priced at £45,461, the Cadillac SRX is cheaper than its Land Rover rivals, such as the Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE. However - with better fuel economy, an almost identical top speed, lower carbon emissions and quicker acceleration - the Land Rover Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE is the better choice.

Unfortunately, the high-performance engine is not efficient and that means running costs will be high. Fuel is consumed quickly and the model achieves just 25.2 mpg – a figure which is unlikely to encourage 4x4 fans to part with their cash. The powerful vehicle also emits a large amount of carbon dioxide with emission levels of 260g/km putting it firmly into the most expensive road tax bracket (M).

Overall, the Cadillac SRX is a decent 4x4 which offers fairly high levels of performance but which is let down by steep running costs. The low purchase price is likely to be an attractive offer but buyers may see the more expensive Land Rovers as a wiser long term investment.
