The 320i Sport Plus has a very economical engine, although the diesel version is better. The Sport Plus trim comes with loads of equipment as standard, but the SE trim is not far behind and is much cheaper, plus it avoids the sport suspension, which can be uncomfortable.

Overall, the 320i is a great car with good performance, but if you’re looking for something really exciting, you will have to fork out for a bigger engine.

PROS:  The 320i has a very economical petrol engine and the 3 Series coupe has fantastic handling and driveability. The Sport Plus trim comes with everything you could want in the cabin, including Bluetooth and satellite navigation.

CONS:  The diesel engine is more economical and the 320i engine won’t provide much excitement. The Sport trim is a not necessarily worth the upgrade from the SE.

Behind the Wheel

The 320i Sport Plus has a 170 bhp engine delivering 155 lb-ft of torque at 4250rpm and reaches 0-62 mph in 8.1 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.

The car handles extremely well, and the well balanced rear-wheel drive chassis makes for a composed and lively driving experience on all types of road.

The 320i engine is not the most powerful, but it is smooth and quiet, with the cabin insulated from outside sounds, although there is a little wind noise at high speeds.

Looks & Equipment

The Sport Plus coupe comes with leather seats, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, alloy wheels, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth, satellite navigation and rear parking sensors as standard.

The 3 Series coupe looks great and has a decent amount of standard kit. The iDrive system is much easier to get to grips with than before and all the controls are angled towards the driver, with perhaps the only downside being how many generic looking buttons and controls there are for the stereo.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Safety levels are high in this model with the car achieving a five star rating in the NCAP crash tests for overall safety. This is thanks to a range of standard safety features which include six airbags, dynamic stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and dynamic traction control.

The coupe has lots of room in the front and back, with plenty of leg room for both passengers and drivers. The boot is of a reasonable size too with 440 litres of space available with all of the seats in place. Folding down the rear seats will increase this drastically and the only slight disadvantage to the boot is its awkward shape which makes loading and unloading troublesome.

BMWs are always well built and the 3 Series Coupe should prove to be very reliable.

Value for Money

The 320i Sport Plus model costs £32,135 and has a combined fuel economy of 42.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 154g/km which put the car in VED band G. These costs re fairly low considering the amount of performance the 320i delivers.

The Sport Plus model comes with just about everything you could want in the cabin including satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard. However, the SE is much cheaper and comes with nearly the same amount of equipment, so if you have no need for the sporty extras it might be wasted money. The petrol engine is very efficient but not as efficient as the diesel version.
