PROS: An incredibly efficient engine with loads of power and speed. The 325d is much better value for money than the petrol versions and the Sport Plus comes with loads of features, such as satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard.
CONS: The 325d is not as efficient as the lesser 320d version and the suspension on the Sport Plus trim can be quite uncomfortable.
Although not quite as good to drive as the coupe or saloon models, the 325d Convertible is still a blast and offers nearly as much driving pleasure as its tin-topped brethren.
The 325d Sport Plus has a 204 bhp engine delivering 317 lb-ft of torque at 1750 rpm and reaching 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 148 mph.
The 325d engine is really powerful but smooth and quiet, and the engine is muffled even with the roof down.
BMW’s metal convertible roof works nicely to keep the sound out when it up and even when the roof is down, the noise in the front seats is still softened.
The Sport Plus convertible comes with leather seats, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, 19 inch alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and satellite navigation as standard.
BMW have a rock-solid reputation for reliability and the 3 Series convertible should be a very reliable car.
Safety is top rate, too with standard equipment including six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic brake control and dynamic traction control. An optional extra is the Active Security Package (with lane change and lane departure-warning systems), with an alarm as standard. The metal coupe-cabriolet roof is much more secure than a soft-top would be. It was awarded the top five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests, too.
The convertible has loads of room in the front, but the rear seat room does suffer thanks to the roof. The boot is smaller than other 3 Series models, but there is a through-hatch for skis, golf bags and so on and the rear backrests fold down to provide extra space.
The 325d Sport Plus model costs £41,345 and has a combined fuel economy of 46.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of 160g/km.
The 325d has an amazingly efficient engine, although not as efficient as the 320d. However, the bigger engine performs an awful lot better, so if you clock up a lot of miles and like your cars fast and powerful, this is an excellent option. The cheaper SE trim is probably better value for money though, as it still comes with loads of equipment, but without the often uncomfortable suspension.
