Volvo has finally revealed the first full images of its Concept Coupe ahead of the car's world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Although Volvo has already teased the Concept Coupe, this is the first time we've actually seen the car in its entirety.

The Concept Coupe's styling is the work of Volvo's new Senior Vice President of Design, Thomas Ingenlath (the bespectacled man in the teaser video here) and has been designed to introduce Volvo's new design language. Put simply, the Concept Coupe gives us an idea of what future Volvos could look like. And given the fact that it looks pretty ruddy marvellous, we'd say that this is 'a good thing.'

At the front end the Concept Coupe gets Volvo's new corporate face with a 'floating' radiator grille, a low, flat bonnet and a large Volvo logo. There are also new T-shaped LED daytime-running lights along with 21-inch alloy wheels.

Volvo claims that the Concept Coupe is designed to echo that most iconic of Volvo models, the P1800 coupe of the 1960s (as driven by a pre-007 Roger Moore in The Saint). However, unlike most modern cars which draw their inspiration from historic models (the Fiat 500, the MINI etc.) the Concept Coupe is a thoroughly modern design.

Ingenlath said of the Concept Coupe's links to the P1800: "Using elements from the P1800 exterior and interior has nothing to do with being retro. We are using these subtle links to a glorious past to create a future where sheer beauty becomes a recognised part of Volvo's identity."

On the inside, the Concept Coupe's cabin is dominated by a huge central touchscreen and there are lashings of wood-'n'-leather. It's a simple cabin too with very little clutter in the way of buttons and switches. It is, in short, very Swedish.

The Concept Coupe is built upon Volvo's new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) which will underpin a host of future Volvo models starting with the new XC90 next year. Under the bonnet, Volvo has fitted one of its new Drive-E four-cylinder petrol engines, mated to a hybrid system which Volvo claims gives the car V8 levels of power. Volvo has not confirmed the exact performance statistics for the Concept Coupe but claims a total power output of around 400bhp and 443lb-ft of torque.
