Volkswagen has released images of its new Golf R 400 concept, which has wowed the crowds at this year's Beijing Motor Show.

The new concept has been built to celebrate 40 years of the Volkswagen Golf, and is an "even more extreme" version of the Golf R hatchback, which sees power from the car's 2.0-litre TFSI petrol increased from 300 PS (296bhp) to 400 PS (395bhp).

As a result of the power increase, the Golf R 400 promises a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds -- a full second quicker than the production Golf R -- and will hit 174mph flat out.

To harness this bonkers power output, the Golf R 400, like the production car, gets Volkswagen's 4Motion four-wheel drive system, with the power delivered to the wheels via a six-speed double-clutch gearbox.

In addition to the engine modifications, the Golf R 400 also features a range of styling modifications, including new bumpers, flared wheel arches, bigger wheels and, on the inside, racing seats.

The Golf R 400 also comes with a range of 'Lemon Yellow' highlights, such as the horizontal stripe across the grille, which helps to differentiate it from the lesser models in the Golf range. The yellow theme is continued on the interior stitching.

Unfortunately, Volkswagen claims that it has no immediate plans to put the Golf R 400 into production.
