A new system, which helps drivers to avoid or reduce the damage from low speed collisions, is set to benefit Mazda drivers across the UK.
The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will be fitted as standard in all new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV models. The technology has been constructed to help drivers avoid a frontal collision when driving at low speeds. The SCBS system can detect (and hopefully prevent) potential collisions at speeds of up to 19mph.
The problem of low speed collisions
Surprisingly, collisions at low speed are currently the most common cause of accidents in the UK. Hopes will be high that this technology can help to avoid collisions or, at least, limit the damage caused by them. A laser sensor is situated at the top of the windscreen and detects a vehicle or obstacle in front of the car. It will then monitor the gap and closing speed when you are driving at speeds of between 2.5mph and 19mph. In the event that the SCBS technology calculates the potential of any collision as a result of a lack of response from the driver, the braking system will come into its own. When the driver activates the brakes, there will be a faster response. If the driver fails to prevent an accident then the system kicks into action and the automatic braking operation is triggered.
Mazda have recently stated that their ultimate goal with this project is to encourage an accident-free and safe culture on UK roads. The company has recently poured time, resources and money into development and research in this area. The Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV will go on sale this spring. This means that the system will make its first appearance at the same time. Mazda will be hoping that the implementation of the new technology is the first step to increasing the level of safety on UK roads.
