The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is powered by a four-cylinder TwinPower turbo engine (BMW has not made it clear whether it is a diesel or a petrol unit) mated to a 94bhp electric motor.
BMW claims that the Concept X5 eDrive can travel for up to 19 miles on electric power only thanks to its high-voltage lithium-ion battery, which is stored under the boot floor. Thanks to the placement of the battery, interior space is largely unaffected. The battery can be topped up from any domestic power socket by using either a domestic power socket or a dedicated charging point.
The Concept X5 eDrive has a top speed of 75mph and BMW claims that it will return a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 74.3mpg, while emitting less than 90g/km of CO2.
BMW has also introduced a number of minor styling tweaks which differentiate the Concept X5 from the standard car. Along with new specially designed roof rails, the Concept C5 gets 21-inch alloy wheels which are both lightweight and aerodynamically optimised.
It's unclear whether BMW intends to put the Concept X5 eDrive into production; however, it seems likely that a plug-in hybrid X5 could be on the cards in the next few years.
