When the Peugeot 208 was launched last year, you could be forgiven for feeling a tiny bit sorry for it. Not only was it being launched into the most fiercely competitive market segment of them all, but it also had to endure the obligatory, and largely meaningless, comparisons with the legendary Peugeot 205.

Thankfully, the 208 is not only a revival of the Peugeot spirit which made the 205 such a success during the 1980s, but it is also our favourite car in the supermini class.

The 208 is a fantastic-looking car, blessed with the sort of chic French styling which the majority of cars in this class can only dream of. It's the same story inside; the 208's interior is both well-built and effortlessly stylish.

There is plenty of space inside the 208 too. With a 285-litre boot and enough space for four adults to sit comfortably, the Peugeot is more than practical enough to hold its own amongst its rivals. It's a very refined car too, making it a comfortable and relaxing companion both around town and on the motorway.

On the road, the 208 feels instantly more grown-up than its predecessor, the 207. Add on to this its range of perky petrol and frugal diesel engines and you're left with a very convincing all-rounder.
