A retired New York school teacher has clocked up more than 3 million miles in his Volvo P1800S.

Irv Gordon has driven his red Volvo P1800 the equivalent of 120 times around the world, or to the moon and back six times, since he bought the car for $4,150 in 1966 at the age of 25.

Since then, the Volvo has received 857 oil changes, 30 replacement drive belts and 150 points and spark plugs; however, Gordon claims it has never broken down.

Gordon, now 73, has held the Guinness World Record for the highest vehicle mileage since 2002.

He said: "Most people think it’s crazy that I’ve clocked up so many miles but driving is my drug of choice.

"I used to go on driving holidays and had a 125-mile commute to work, so the miles have just added up."

It took Gordon 21 years to clock up the first million miles and 15 more after that to hit the 2 million mile mark. Gordon claims that he averages between 85,000 and 100,000 miles a year.

Gordon regularly takes the Volvo on road trips across America and passed the magical 3-million mark on the Seward Highway in Alaska.

Despite the car's advancing years and stratospheric mileage, Gordon says that it shows no signs of letting up yet.

"I have a feeling I'll be dead long before the car."
