CarSite Verdict:  3.25/5
The Golf lacks equipment and technology, but the cars maximum five-star rating assures drivers that this car covers safety measures. It is also efficient and has fairly low CO2 emissions, meaning lower running costs and less road tax to pay.

PROS:  This medium sized family car by Volkswagen is highly efficient and has been awarded the maximum rating of five stars by NCAP for its overall construction and performance.

CONS:  Should drivers want alloy wheels, metallic paint, cruise control, rear parking sensors, MP3 connectivity or Bluetooth, there will be additional charges resulting in a much higher overall price.

Behind the Wheel

111 mph is the top speed this car can reach, which is average for a car of this class, and its ability to travel from 0-62 mph is quite slow at 12.3 seconds. The power output of this car is 84 bhp (85 ps) and it has torque figures of 118 lb-ft at 1500-3500 rpm.

The car handles well with smooth, responsive steering, but engine performance is not up to the high standards of some other models within the range.

Looks & Equipment

The in-car entertainment is limited to a CD player, but MP3 connectivity is available for £100 extra. Bluetooth is offered at a price of £310, but satallite navigation is not available with the Golf S 1.2 TSI.

Cruise control can be fitted for £235 and rear parking sensors can be bought for £440.

Air conditioning is standard, but there is no option of climate control as an extra. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard, but leather seating is not available.

The exterior of this model is fairly basic, as alloy wheels are not a standard component, but can be purchased for £410. Metallic paint is available for £465.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

An alarm is not fitted as standard with this model, but drivers can have one fitted for £230 extra. Central locking is standard. The Golf is fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard, too.

This Golf is practical and seats five occupants but only has three-door access. The boot space is fairly good with 350 litres when the rear seats are upright and 1305 litres when the seats are folded down.

In terms of reliability, the car is covered under warranty for three years and up to 60,000 miles.

Value for Money

The Volkswagen Golf S 1.2 TSI (85ps) 3dr can be bought for £15,850. This model lacks some of the features that drivers might expect with a modern car, although there are plenty of optional extras. As a family car, safety will be important and the Golf was awarded five stars by NCAP.

The efficiency will also be appealing and the Golf has favourable running costs, achieving
51.4 mpg and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.
