PROS: The estate is a practical family car and the Golf has good fuel efficiency for low running costs. It is cheap to buy, too.
CONS: This is the basic trim option, so the car does not come with much equipment as standard.
The Golf Estate delivers an excellent driving experience and is a lot of fun, with sharp and responsive handling. The ride is a smooth and comfortable one, and most notably much more refined than that of its predecessor, with very little noise intrusion. The car also deals with most potholes and road imperfections fairly well.
The top speed of the estate is 118 mph and takes 11.3 seconds for it to travel from 0-62 mph. The car’s power output is 104 bhp and has torque figures of 129 lb-ft at 1550-4100 rpm.
The S is a basic trim option, so don't expect too much as standard.
Alloy wheels are unavailable, but metallic paint can be added for £465.
Air conditioning is fitted, but climate control is not an option. Electric door mirrors and electric front windows are standard.
Cruise control is unavailable, as are leather seats. Rear parking sensors can be bought on top of the purchase price of the vehicle for £545.
The in-car entertainment is limited to a CD player. However, MP3 connectivity is available for £105, but otherwise the car is very basic in terms of standard equipment. Bluetooth and satallite navigation are both unavailable.
The car's security could be better, as an alarm will cost drivers £230. However, central locking is fitted as standard. It also comes with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standard.
This car is very practical. It seats five occupants and has five-door access, which is convenient for a family car. The boot space is also generous, as when the rear seats are upright there is 505 litres of boot space, and when the rear seats are folded there is 1,495 litres.
