The Vauxhall Zafira Elite 1.7 ecoFLEX (125ps) offers low running costs and bags of practicality and space. It's also better to drive than you'd expect and very well made.

PROS:  Practical, well made, spacious, reliable, efficient.

CONS:  The rear seats are only suitable for children. A bit boring.

Behind the Wheel

The Zafira's 1.7-litre diesel engine offers decent performance credentials and produces 123bhp and 206 lb-ft of torque. This is enough to haul the Zafira from 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 117mph which is fairly impressive for a big, diesel-powered people carrier.

The Zafira also handles well for a people carrier and grips to the road firmly through the bends. It also rides very smoothly and the engine is fairly refined for a diesel. A bit of wind noise creeps into the cabin at motorway speeds but this isn't the end of the world.

Looks & Equipment

The Zafira is fairly good looking for a people carrier but it's still a little bit dull and the fact that it's so common doesn't help much.

Standard equipment on this model includes power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric windows, cruise control, leather seats, an immobiliser and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.

A built-in sat nav is still not an option whilst a few other options are only available at cost. Bluetooth connectivity can be added for £315 whilst an alarm costs £250 and rear parking sensors cost £395. The exterior can also be upgraded to a metallic paint finish for £495.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Zafira is an incredibly practical car and its seats can be repositioned and adjusted to meet the needs of the occupants. Luggage space can be sacrificed for cabin space and vice versa. As such, the boot capacity varies greatly depending on the number of passengers in the car, with just 140 litres available when all the seats are in place and a full 1,820 litres available when the seats are folded down.

The cabin itself is relatively capacious but the space in the rear seats is at a premium and the back row is only really suitable for children.

The Zafira should also be a reliable car and is covered by a 100,000 mile warranty which should put potential buyers' minds at rest.

Value for Money

Priced at £25,840 this car is one of the most expensive in the Zafira range. However, the vast selection of in-car equipment in addition to the financial savings offered by the ecoFLEX technology mean that it is a great investment.

Running costs are fairly reasonable, with fuel efficiency of 55.4 mpg meaning refuelling is likely to be infrequent. Road tax costs are also manageable under tax band E thanks to the car’s carbon emission of 134 g/km. Insurance premiums are also fairly mid-range under insurance group 18.

The Zafira range also benefits from fairly strong resale values.
