The Toyota Verso T2 2.0 D-4D 5dr provides great MPV practicality. On the road, it handles well and is strong enough for daily use. Spacious and cheap to run, it is a great choice for anyone looking for long-term economy.

Standard equipment is very basic but safety provisions are good. The best bit is that the Verso comes with Toyota’s trusted reliability.

PROS:  Drives well. Handles superbly. Spacious. Extensive safety kit. Good economy. Strong resale values. Reliable.

CONS:  Only basic equipment is provided. Tiny boot.

Behind the Wheel

The Toyota Verso T2 2.0 D-4D 5dr has a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder 16v 1998cc diesel engine, which does well both in town and on the motorway. The engine produces 125bhp and a torque of 228 lb-ft, which provides enough pull to tackle road situations when need arises. A 0-62mph time of 11.3 seconds is impressive given its size. It has a top speed of 115mph, which ensures that the car can maintain a steady pace on the motorway.

On the road, the Verso displays mature handling abilities: firm grip, sharp and accurate steering and controlled body movement. Stability is good and this makes driving through twisty roads enjoyable. Suspension is firm enough to absorb bumps while keeping the ride comfortable. However, very rough road surfaces yield a jittery ride.

The Verso is not the most refined car in the class; neither is it the noisiest. The engine produces a gruff rumble at low speeds, which dies down at cruise speed. Road and wind noise only become intrusive at/above 70mph.

Rear and forward visibility is good, thanks to the large windows and small pillars.

Looks & Equipment

The Verso T2 is a 5-door, 7-seat small MPV. It is made in People Carrier styling but with a bit of modernisation in places, which is appealing. It is large and strongly built. Families and businesses/companies and individuals who love driving bigger cars will find its 4440mm x 1790mm dimensions practical.

The cabin is neat and well-designed. It has none of the luxurious materials found in more premium rivals, but all the plastics and fabrics used are of good quality and finish. The Toyota touch is visible on every surface, giving the interior a clean look.

Only the essentials are provided in the Verso T2. These are: power steering, central locking, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), air con, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, driver airbag, passenger airbags, front side airbags, alarm, immobiliser and CD player. Metallic paint is the only cost option available, and it goes for £450.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Cabin access is made easy by the five-door structure. Middle row seats slide forward to provide access to the rear-most seats. The cabin is quite spacious. There is plenty of head and legroom at the front. Legroom is tight for middle and rear-most passengers.

A large glove box, cubbyholes and door pockets provide sufficient storage space in the cabin. The boot is tiny with the seats up. But when the two rows of seats at the back are folded, it attains a class-matching capacity of 1645 litres.

Driver comfort is assured, with the wide range of adjustments available for both the driver’s seat and the steering wheel. The controls are centrally arranged and within easy reach.

The Verso has every safety kit you can think of, from stability control, anti-lock brakes, hill-start assist, and engine immobiliser to seven airbags, including a driver’s knee bag and deadlocks. It got a five-star rating in overall protection in the Euro NCAP crash test, which is commendable.

Toyota’s reliability is famous the world over, and the Verso bears the car maker’s good quality. It also comes with a lengthy, 5-year/100,000 mile warranty, which will take care of any mechanical problems you encounter.

Value for Money

The Toyota Verso’s list price is on the same level as most rivals. But you can get good discounts. Strong resale values give the Verso advantage over most other MPVs.

Fuel economy is good, with the engine returning 53.3mpg in combined cycle. Carbon emissions average 139g/km, which is impressively low for the class. This puts the car in road tax band E, attracting £115 a year in VED. It sits in insurance group 15 and is cheap to insure. It has a 10,000 mile service interval, which is reasonable given how affordable Toyota Verso service rates are.
