The Verso-S T Spirit is a bit of a letdown. It is not particularly practical and the 1.33-litre engine is a bad joke. There are far better cars out there for the money.

PROS:  The Verso-S T Spirit 1.33 VVT-i 5dr comes with an good amount of kit and the 1.33 engine keeps the running costs low. On top of this there is an ample amount of interior space.

CONS:  Despite the luxury kit, the interior feels a little cheap. The main downside of the T Spirit 1.33 VVT-i 5dr is the fact that it isn't as good to drive as its rivals. The engine is a bit underpowered and the cabin is very noisy at high speeds.

Behind the Wheel

The Verso-S T Spirit is fitted with a 1.33-litre petrol engine which produces 98bhp and 92lb-ft of torque. 0-62mph takes a leisurely 13.1 seconds and flat out you'll only manage 106mph. The engine feels very underpowered and you need to rev the nuts off it to make any sort of progress on the open road.

The engine also gets very noisy at motorway speeds and the Verso-S is no fun to drive thanks to its vague, lifeless steering.

Looks & Equipment

The Toyota Verso-S T Spirit 1.33 VVT-i 5dr is instantly forgettable to look at and on the inside, it is a veritable feast of dull grey plastics.

Standard kit includes air con, power steering, alloy wheels, electric windows, electric door mirrors, rear-parking camera, an alarm and immobiliser, Bluetooth, CD and MP3 connectivity.

Sat-Nav can be specified for £500 and metallic paint will cost you a further £450.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Toyota know that safety is crucial in all vehicles, especially MPVs, whatever their size. Every Verso comes as standard with seven airbags and stability control.

The Verso-S also comes as standard with a five-year/100,000 mile warranty.

The Toyota Verso-S 1.33 VVT i 5dr offers an extremely roomy cabin for such a small MPV. In order to create even more storage, the floor of the boot can be raised to the same height as the opening in order to make it easy to slide heavy items both in and out.

There isn’t much in the way of versatility. The rear seats split and fold 40/60, but that’s about all the Toyota Verso 1.33 VVT i 5dr has to offer in this area.

Value for Money

The Verso-S isn’t particular cheap; it is however one of the cheaper MPVs in the Toyota range. The Toyota Verso-S T Spirit 1.33 VVT-i 5dr costs £15,905 new which, though expensive, is fairly reasonable considering the amount of standard equipment.

Fuel bills will be cheap and the Verso-S manages 51.4mpg and emits 127g/km of CO2. This means low road tax costs under VED band D.
