The Toyota Auris is a car that is in a class that is filled with quality cars such as the VW Golf and Ford Focus, and although Toyota can boast reliability and a good warranty, many people will not be swayed. The car is a very competent medium sized hatchback, and it does offer plenty of space, but it doesn’t have enough unique selling points to trump the competition.

PROS:  The Auris is spacious and the level of trim means that the cabin is comfortable, and the engine is quite powerful and is quite good in terms of performance.

CONS:  This is a very competitive class and the Auris doesn’t quite match its rivals, and the dull drive and average fuel economy means that it is hard to recommend this version of the Auris.

Behind the Wheel

The steering does feel a little sterile and delivers very little feedback to the driver, and with a fairly firm ride it would be expected to be a little more fun to drive. There is plenty of grip and the car reacts exactly as it should do when going through corners, but it never captivates or excites in the way that many of its rivals can do. The driving position is fine, and there is plenty of adjustment that will allow people to get comfortable, but the gear stick is in an awkward position.

This version of the Auris can accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.0 seconds, and the top speed of 121mph means that the car will have plenty of power to deal with motorway driving. The cabin can get a little noisy at higher speeds, which is disappointing in a car like this.

Looks & Equipment

The range of sports cars that are available from Toyota show that they are capable of some excellent car design, but the Auris is frankly a little dull. The headlights and grille combine with the small air intake to make a tidy front end, and the body shape is much the same as many other mid-sized hatchbacks. The back end is perfectly adequate, and offers reasonable access to the boot. On the inside the dashboard is clear and simple to read, which is one of the best things about the Auris. The gear stick is mounted into the large centre console which merges into the handbrake and armrests.

There is plenty of equipment included with this version of the car, and alloy wheels are one feature which improves the look of the car. Cruise control and climate control help to promote a comfortable driving experience, and the power folding mirror is also a nice addition.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Toyota is well known for making reliable cars, but a survey of owners in 2011 did suggest that owners found the reliability for the Auris a little disappointing. The car was awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test, which is down in no small part to the seven airbags included in the car. This version also comes with ESP and traction control which help to improve the overall safety of the car.

The Auris is also a very practical car, and is able to deliver a very good level of space both in the front seats and in the back seats. The boot space should accommodate a fair amount of luggage, and the car is reasonably easy to drive both in the city and out on the open roads.

Value for Money

The list price for this version of the Auris is £17,105, and although it is fairly competitively priced when compared with other cars in the class it is still hard to justify steering away from a Focus, Golf or one of the other great medium sized hatchbacks.

The fuel economy of the 1.6 litre engine is not one of the highlights of the car, as it pushes the car along at an average 42.8mpg. The insurance group is fairly typical of those to be found for other cars in the class, and the resale value is quite good. One positive aspect is that the Auris is delivered with an excellent five year warranty, and a one year AA roadside breakdown policy, which is slightly ahead of the warranty package that is normally available from its rivals.
