If you are looking for an innovative vehicle that offers low emissions and £0 road tax as well as superb fuel economy, the Auris Hybrid is a strong contender. However, the rock-bottom running costs are offset by the Auris' high purchase price.

PROS:  The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 HSD 1.8 VVT-i 5dr is one of the most environmentally friendly cars on the market. Owners will benefit from low fuel bills, free tax and congestion charge exemption.

CONS:  It's expensive to buy and has a low quality interior and forgettable styling.

Behind the Wheel

The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 HSD 1.8 VVT-i 5dr (15" alloys) 5dr has a 1.8-litre petrol engine with variable valve timing and a 98bhp output. On top of this, the vehicle is then fitted with an 81bhp electric motor. An advanced power control unit ensures that the two power sources work well together.

The vehicle produces 105 lb-ft torque at 400rpm and has a top speed of 112mph. It’s certainly not the fastest vehicle on the market. 0-62mph takes a sluggish 11.4 seconds.

The ride is relatively comfortable and the quality of the handling is adequate.

Looks & Equipment

The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 HSD 1.8 VVT-i 5dr is largely indistinguishable from the standard Toyota Auris. It certainly doesn’t scream ‘Hybrid’, it instead appears quite conventional in style, and some may say a little bland.

There are, however, a few clues that suggest this vehicle is not just a normal petrol car. These include an extension of the air intake and a reshaped grille, which in turn allow for improved cooling and airflow efficiency.

Special alloy wheels have been fitted along with the rear spoiler and the ride height is a total of 5mm lower.

These modifications do make the car look a little sportier in style but they are actually there in order to reduce the Auris Hybrid’s drag coefficient.

The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 HSD 1.8 VVT-i 5dr comes as standard with power steering, climate control, electric front mirrors and windows, MP3 connectivity, an immobilizer and a CD player.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Auris Hybrid should be reliable - Toyotas always are - and is supplied with a five year/100,000 mile warranty.

Practicality, however, is compromised by the Auris Hybrid's battery pack which steals boot space. With the rear seats up you get only 279-litres of space, a significant reduction in comparison to the standard Auris' 354-litres.

Every Hybrid comes with front, side and curtain airbags as well as an additional airbag, which is there to protect the driver’s knees. The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 has received an overall Euro NCAP rating of 5 stars. ESP is also an option on all models.

Value for Money

The Toyota Auris Hybrid T4 HSD 1.8 VVT-i 5dr is currently priced at £20,095 and, thanks to the Auris' hybrid technology, you should manage 74.3mpg (combined) which is superb. CO2 emissions of 89g/km mean the Auris Hybrid falls under VED band A so road tax and the congestion charge will be free.

These savings sound great but the Auris Hybrid costs nearly three grand more than the most expensive standard Auris so, if you're not racking up a high mileage, the thirstier petrol models will still be more cost effective.
