If you are looking for a large car that offers plenty of practical space and the surefootedness of four wheel drive, then the Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0i ES 5dr could be the car for you. This large estate car comes with high levels of safety equipment, has bold looks that make it stand out from the crowd, is solidly built and would make an ideal workhorse or family car.

PROS:  With its four wheel drive system, the Legacy Tourer 2.0i ES offers good grip and levels of traction. The cabin is very spacious and with the rear seats folded, it can swallow large amounts of luggage. It also comes with a long list of equipment as standard.

CONS:  There are cheaper alternatives out there with lower running costs.

Behind the Wheel

The flat-four cylinder 2.0 litre engine develops 148bhp at 6000rpm and 145 lb-ft of torque at 3000rpm. A 0-62 mph time of 9.8 seconds is no embarrassment considering its size and there’s a pleasant distinctive thrum from its flat-four engine.

The car’s suspension has been set up for comfort rather than handling and therefore while it’s easy to drive and a pleasant place to be on most roads its far from agile and body roll in corners is noticeable. However, with drive going to all four wheels it never struggles for traction.

The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable and the steering wheel can be adjusted both for rake and reach so getting comfortable shouldn’t be a problem. All round visibility is good - handy for a big car - and the mirrors are electrically folding. The dashboard is generally well laid out but looks slightly dated when compared with certain rivals and, as with other Subarus, the quality of the materials could be better.

Looks & Equipment

While the Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0i ES 5dr could never be described as a handsome car it does have a certain crispness to its appearance, particularly head on. With its bonnet scoop, swept back headlamps and distinctive Subaru grille, it looks like a car capable of high speed, even though it is not.

Inside there is a plethora of kit including dual zone climate control, folding mirrors, CD, Bluetooth, Sat Nav, hill-start assist and cruise control all as standard. It also comes with alloy wheels, stability control, alarm and immobiliser and front fog lights. Metallic paint is a £480 option.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The cabin is very spacious with plenty of legroom and headroom in both front and rear. The rear seats can be lowered flat to increase the already large boot space of 526 litres to 1,726 litres should the need arise.

The Legacy comes with a five star Euro NCAP rating. It has six airbags as well as ABS, stability and traction control systems, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).

Subarus have a good reputation for reliability and the car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0i ES 5dr is a fair amount of car for £21,995 however, its running costs are higher than many of its rivals and it’s not exactly a thrilling drive.

The Legacy will return 32.8mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 199g/km mean that it falls under VED band J. Insurance, however, should be relatively reasonable under group 22.
