Overall, the Skoda Roomster Scout 1.2 TSI 105ps is a great car for those looking for something which delivers practical space for families along with decent performance levels. Naturally, the efficiency is compromised by the additional power, but this model still performs well within its class and that makes it the perfect compromise for motorists.

PROS:  The perfect compromise of power and efficiency, this model delivers a healthy power output whilst remaining financially friendly.

CONS:  Green credentials aren’t a strong point for this model and the list of optional extras for the interior is lengthy and expensive.

Behind the Wheel

The four cylinder engine delivers a healthy amount of power to this large vehicle with a maximum output of 104 bhp (105 ps) at 5000 rpm. This puts the car’s top speed at 114 mph which is fairly good for a car in this class. Acceleration is quicker than in other models as well and this gives the car an extra boost, helping it to reach 0-62 mph in 10.9 seconds.

In terms of handling, the car performs well and offers the security and stability expected. However, those looking for fun and excitement behind the wheel will need to look elsewhere.

As a large vehicle, fuel consumption levels are likely to be higher than those experienced in smaller family cars. Whilst the car fails to live up to the high standards set by the Greenline model it manages to perform well within its class, achieving 49.6 mpg on a combined cycle. Carbon emissions of 134 g/km are at the upper end of the scale but still translate to fairly manageable road tax costs under tax band E.

Looks & Equipment

Some criticism has been made over the design style of the Roomster which seems to have little congruency between the front and rear ends. This model offers a good selection of basics but those looking for additional comfort will be met with a fairly long and expensive list of extras.

Standard equipment for this model includes power steering, central locking, stability control, air conditioning, alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.

Options such as Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav can be added for £335 and £525 respectively whilst part-leather seats are £600, rear parking sensors are £280 and cruise control £175. The air conditioning fitted as standard can also be upgraded to climate control for an extra £275 and those interested in enhancing the external appearance can invest in a metallic paint finish for an extra £440.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Although some inner materials feel a little cheap, the overall quality of the car is high and the fit and finish are of a good quality. Practicality is high for a people carrier and there is plenty of cabin space for passengers. The driving position offers good visibility of the road and the option to adjust this is available to help drivers sit in the optimum position.

The boot capacity is also decent for a car of this class and there is a 450 litre capacity offered when the seats are in place. Those who require additional storage can expand this to 1,780 litres by folding the seats down, making this car ideal for large families.

In terms of safety, the car comes fitted with driver, passenger and front side air bags as standard features. An immobiliser is also fitted to protect the car from theft but owners who want the additional security of an alarm will have to pay an additional £285.

Reliability is expected to be strong with this model as well and a three year warranty for 60,000 miles is provided in order to give buyers peace of mind.

Value for Money

Priced at £15,120 this car is marginally cheaper than the Roomster Greenline II 1.2 TDI CR 75ps but offers better performance levels. However, efficiency is lower than in the Greenline and buyers will need to decide what aspect of motoring they value most when making their decision.

For those looking for the most affordable car the Greenline would be the best option, but those who want a combination of performance and efficiency will find that the Scout offers the best compromise. Running costs are still fairly manageable with fuel efficiency achieving 49.6 mpg and road tax falling into tax band E, whilst insurance premiums remain fairly low under insurance group 12.
