Practicality and performance characterise this large family estate and make it a great option. The trim level is still lacking in places and the purchase price, whilst good for its class, is a little higher than other models within the range. However, with plenty of financial benefits on offer from low running costs, the model is still a great investment.

PROS:  This diesel model offers the perfect combination of efficiency and performance, making it an ideal option for those on a budget.

CONS:  The purchase price is higher than some other models in the range and the interior kit is still lacking.

Behind the Wheel

Delivering 138 bhp of power through a four cylinder petrol engine, the Skoda Octavia Estate SE 2.0 TDI CR offers a healthier boost of power than other models. A top speed of 131 mph is impressive for a car of this class and acceleration speeds are much stronger as travelling from 0-62 mph takes just 9.6 seconds.

Despite the larger engine, the efficiency of this model is actually better than some of the other models thanks to the high fuel efficiency diesel cars are known for. This model offers an impressive 57.6 mpg with carbon emissions also kept low at 129 g/km – putting the car in a relatively low road tax band (D).

Suspension is good, evening out bumps in the road, and handling feels stable, even on motorways.

Looks & Equipment

The Skoda Octavia Estate is an attractive car and the arrangement of controls within the cabin is fairly logical, so operating devices whilst driving should be straight forward. The SE trim level offers additional features to drivers but there are still some fittings missing.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with CD connectivity.

Whilst this is not much improvement on the standards S trim level, the SE model comes with a greater range of options as chargeable extras.

A built-in sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connectivity for the stereo and rear parking sensors can all be added for an extra cost of £1,660, £745, £185 and £300 respectively. Cruise control and climate control are also available at respective prices of £225 and £490 whilst stability control remains an add-on feature which is priced at £395.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The large family estate is great for practicality and there is plenty of room within the cabin and boot. The boot capacity offers a generous 605 litres when the seats are in place, expanding by more than 1,000 litres to 1,655 litres when the seats are folded down. This gives owners plenty of room within the vehicle, although the boot is a little awkwardly shaped and the high lip of the car can make loading a little tricky.

Both the front seat and steering column offer plenty of adjustment for driver comfort and it also makes it easy to achieve a good driving position.

In terms of safety, the car scored four out of five for overall safety in the NCAP crash tests and whilst some features are offered as standard, the car is missing vital features such as standard electronic stability which can be added for additional costs of £395. This is the same as in the S model but the SE also benefits from a standard fitted alarm, increasing the security on offer.Features which are fitted as standard include driver, passenger and front side airbags, as well as an immobiliser to protect the car from theft.

The Skoda Octavia Estate is expected to perform well and comes with a three year warranty for 60,000 miles to offer buyers additional assurance.

Value for Money

Priced at £19,690 this model is still affordably priced for its class but costs a fair amount more than other Skoda Octavia Estate models. However, running costs will be much lower in this diesel making it a wiser long term investment.

Road tax is low under tax band D and the high fuel efficiency means refuelling will be infrequent. Insurance premiums are unlikely to be excessive either, falling into a mid-range insurance group (20).
