Estate cars aren’t generally considered to be particularly sporty, but in the Octavia Estate vRS Skoda has delivered a car that really does offer some good performance and a great driving experience. Fuel efficiency isn’t as good as it could be, but the cabin is large and spacious as you would expect, and this really is a car that combines practicality and sporty performance very well.

PROS:  An estate car with real hot hatch performance is hard to come by without breaking the bank, but the Octavia Estate achieves this and also manages to handle like a much smaller car too.

CONS:  The Octavia vRS isn’t quite as fast as some of its rivals, and for a car as practical as this to only include curtain airbags as an optional extra is really disappointing.

Behind the Wheel

Most estate cars tend to lose a bit of performance and handling when compared with their hatchback companions, but the vRS really does do this very well, with the changes almost imperceptible. The steering is accurate and responsive with a ride that is comfortable without being too soft, and the car also has plenty of grip and minimal body roll when cornering. The driving position is very good with a seat and steering wheel that can be fully adjusted to suit the driver, and a high level of visibility in every direction too.

The engine performance of the 2.0 litre petrol engine is quite good, surpassing many of its rivals. Acceleration from 0-62mph is achieved in only 7.3 seconds, with the top speed of 147mph also very impressive. The cabin is very refined meaning that the car is a little more practical than other hot hatches, but this can be a plus point for those who are buying the car for its practicality rather than hot hatchback pedigree.

Looks & Equipment

This souped-up version of the Skoda Octavia estate may not be as brash and bold as some of its rivals, but it is still an attractive estate which has a few nice touches above and beyond the standard model. The alloy wheels are a good clue that this isn’t the standard version, and the subtle spoiler on the back window is also a hint that this is more than just the standard Octavia. Within the cabin things are a little bolder, with the supportive vRS seats in place, and a simple dashboard that gives the driver all the information necessary.

The level of equipment included with this version of the Octavia is also very good, with a CD multi changer being one of the highlights. Cruise control makes long journeys much easier, while climate control allows the cabin to be comfortable during the journey. With a competitive price tag like the Octavia, the optional extra of leather seats can be a desirable addition.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

One of the main reasons that people do purchase estate cars is because of their practicality, and the Octavia doesn’t disappoint. A large boot and plenty of space in the back seats means that this can easily serve as a family car. The safety equipment included with the car does generally make the Octavia a good option, with airbags protecting the driver and front passenger, but those with families may want to consider adding the curtain airbag to ensure the passengers in the rear are equally protected.

The Skoda Octavia has exceeded the brand’s reputation for reliability, winning top spot in a number of driver surveys for the good reliability.

Value for Money

With a list price of £22,580, this really is an estate car that combines good engine performance with affordability. Being cheaper than many of its rivals will also attract many people who wouldn’t normally consider the Octavia.

Fuel efficiency isn’t too bad for a car of this size, especially with the hot hatchback pedigree of the car, with the 2.0 litre engine delivering an average 36.7mpg. The insurance costs are quite high, but when it comes to selling the car this estate will hold its value quite well. The Skoda Octavia is supplied with a three year or sixty thousand mile warranty, and also has a three year membership of the RAC should any breakdowns occur.
