The Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet GT-Line 180 2dr is perfect for soaking in the road sights all year round. Just lower the roof to enjoy some sunshine and breeze, and restore it to shield yourself from drizzle and snow and you will be fine. It also offers great value for money and is one of the cheapest channels to being part of the convertible owners club.

The level of standard kit on this car is impressive and that, combined with the gutsy engine, is enough to create desire for the car.

PROS:  Cute looks. Good engine. Airy. Refined. Very generous offering of standard kit.

CONS:  Unsettled ride. Squeezed rear. Small boot. High running costs.

Behind the Wheel

The Renault Megane CC GT is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, 16v 1998cc petrol engine which is powerful and quick. It produces 180bhp and has torque figures of 222 lb-ft, which is enough for a punchy drive. A 0-62mph time of 8.6 seconds makes the Megane CC impressively speedy. Factor in a top speed of 140mph and there is no reason why you shouldn’t have a thrilling driving experience in the car.

Handling is good enough to guarantee a comfortable ride. But the suspension is on the firm side and does not shield you from the roughest of roads fully. The car displays a good level of grip when the roof is up but loses some of its flexibility when the roof is rolled down. The steering is set to perfectly balance control and response. Be sure to slow down when approaching bends to minimize body roll which can be in excess at speed.

The Megane CC GT-Line enjoys class-leading refinement, thanks to a quiet engine and a clever wind deflector that blocks wind noise. As a result, the car remains surprisingly quiet even with the roof down. At higher speeds though, wind noise is bound to disrupt the tranquillity.

You have glass all over and reasonably sized windscreen pillars to ensure that you enjoy superb visibility.

Looks & Equipment

The Renault Megane CC is a two-door, four-seat open car. It bears premium looks and is as eye-catching with the roof down as it is with the roof up. The entire roof is made up of two glass panels and these give the car a modern appearance.

The interior is just as plush as the exterior. The cabin layout is good and the materials used high quality and soft. A fixed glass deflector adds to the cosy interior look and feel.

You will not grumble over shortage of standard equipment because Renault spoils you with kit. Power steering, stability control, central locking, immobiliser, alarm, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, driver airbag, passenger airbags, front side airbags, climate control, cruise control, sat nav, rear-parking sensors, alloy wheels, MP3 connectivity, CD player and Bluetooth are all fitted.

The only extras you will have to pay for if you so wish are metallic paint worth £455 and leather seats, which go for £940.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renault is among the front runners in car safety and this trait is reflected in the Megane CC GT-Line. All the basic safety features and a number of high tech security ones are installed. It scored the top-most, 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test for occupant safety. But you may want to reconsider taking your kid for a ride in the car because child-seat mountings are absent, and side airbags alone may not suffice. In fact, the car only got 3 stars for child safety in the NCAP test.

Renault’s reputation has improved significantly, with the Megane range of cars edging close to the top 10 cars in reliability. This particular CC feels solid and should provide trouble-free service. Should bits start falling apart or malfunctioning - the possibility of which is low – you have a 3-year/100,000 mile warranty to sort that out for you.

The cabin is roomy enough for two. The rear seats, though glamorous and well-set, are too uncomfortable due to the tiny legroom. The boot is a good size (417 litres) with the roof up. When you fold the roof, it disappears into the boot, occupying precious space to leave only 211 litres. If you must stack your sports gear when going out with your mate, fold the ineffective rear seats to increase space.

The driving position will be good enough for most drivers.

Value for Money

The Megane CC GT-Line’s current list price is on par with a number of rivals. Popular rival Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet is more expensive. It is expected that the Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet GT-Line will hold its value well, aided in part by its fantastic standard kit and the desirability of open cars.

Open cars are more of luxurious toys and less of practical machines, and the accompanying running costs tend to be higher than in most car categories. The most frugal engines in the Renault Megane CC GT-Line range are the diesels, giving as much as 48mpg in combined cycle. The TCe on this model is thirstier, but manages a return of 34.9mpg, which is respectable for this class.

Emissions are high at 188g/km and will cost you £245 a year in VED. First year road tax is £445. Insurance costs are no better, as the car is placed under group 25. But you will enjoy some maintenance reprieve from the lengthy, 18,000 mile service interval.
