The Peugeot Expert Tepee Comfort L1 5/6 Seats HDi 98 is a good value people carrier with bags of practicality and a comfortable ride. However, the car's van underpinnings are all too obvious and there are better people carriers out there for the money.

PROS:  Practical, comfortable, fuel efficient

CONS:  Ungainly looks, mediocre performance, lack of standard kit

Behind the Wheel

The Expert Tepee Comfort L1 is a very slow car indeed; its diesel engine manages to haul it from 0-62mph in a very slow 18.5 seconds and on to a low top speed of 97mph.

Unsurprisingly, the Expert Tepee handles like a van but it's not as bad as you'd expect. There is very little body roll through the corners and the steering feels well weighted and precise for such a large car. The ride is a little uncomposed but it's not too bad and, providing basic family motoring is all you have in mind, the Expert Tepee is fine.

Looks & Equipment

The Expert Tepee is big and boxy, even for a people carrier. It's been relatively well styled and the front light clusters give the car a fairly attractive appearance but it's still an ugly car. The Expert's rivals from Ford and VW are much more attractively styled.

Air-con, electric front windows and a CD player are about all you get as standard. Alloy wheels will set you back £480, stability control and cruise control cost £570 together, electric mirrors cost £170, metallic paint costs £470, rear parking sensors cost £410 and MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth are a joint option at £210.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Practicality is the Expert Tepee's trump card and the boot is very large indeed with 1068-litres on offer with the rear seats up and an impressive 2163 available with them down.

Peugeot have dropped a bit of a clanger when it comes to safety. A driver's airbag comes as standard but a passenger airbag is a costly option - this really isn't good enough these days.

The Expert van on which the Tepee is based has been around for seventeen years so there are unlikely to be many reliability issues. Having said that, Peugeot have a chequered history when it comes to reliability.

Value for Money

At £22,795, the Expert Tepee offers decent value for money if you can do without speed, safety and a good amount of standard kit.

You should get 40.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 183g/km put the Tepee under tax band I which is pretty high for a diesel car of this size.
