The Nissan Note 1.6 Tekna 5dr is a well-kitted out small family car that offers performance, practicality and safety in an eye-catching package. With its good specification, spacious cabin and comprehensive safety kit, it is a car that families and first time buyers can enjoy and rely upon but other models in the range offer better value for money.

PROS:  The 1.6 litre engine is the most powerful in the Note range. The Tekna trim offers keyless go and part-leather seats to enhance comfort.

CONS:  The 1.6 litre engine has fairly mediocre fuel economy at just 42.8 mpg. It drops further if you choose the automatic gearbox and the higher purchase price of the Tekna version is not worth paying as you only get a couple of extra features.

Behind the Wheel

The 1.6 Tekna's, 4-cylinder, 16v petrol engine produces 108bhp at 6000 rpm while the torque figures stand at 113 lb-ft at 4400 rpm. This translates to a top speed of 114 mph, with the car capable of travelling from 0-62 mph in 10.7 seconds.

The Note’s narrow body and light steering combine to make it easy to drive around town, while the steering provides good feedback at higher speeds. The car’s firm suspension gives it good stability through corners and surprisingly the quality of the ride remains uncompromised.

The suspension can be a little noisy but wind and road noise are well isolated, making the cabin a fairly comfortable place to be. The engine is well refined.

The Note’s two-tier dashboard is well-organised and easy to use and getting comfortable should be easy. The steering wheel does not adjust for reach, however the driver’s seat will alter for height. All-round visibility is also excellent.

Looks & Equipment

The Note’s styling is a little quirky but inside the cabin high-quality materials are used and overall the car is solidly constructed.

As the range topping trim level, the Tekna comes with a great range of features which expands on the CD player with MP3 connectivity and electric front windows found on the entry level Visia. Alloy wheels, electric rear windows, satellite navigation, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and part-leather seats are all offered as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Note has a tall roof-line which produces a roomy cabin. The rear seats slide back and forth allowing you to determine the balance between rear legroom and luggage capacity which improves comfort.

The boot is a little on the small side, with 280 litres of capacity offered with the seats in place and 1,332 litres available when the seats are down. There is also an abundance of compartments for extra storage space located within the cabin to offer additional practicality.

In terms of safety, the 1.6 Tekna has twin front and side airbags.

An immobiliser and deadlocks protect the car from theft.

Reliability is excellent too and in the JD Power customer satisfaction survey the Note finished a respectable fourth in the supermini class. This combines with the car's three year warranty for 60,000 miles to offer buyers plenty of confidence in the reliability of their vehicle.

Value for Money

The NOTE 1.6 Tekna is priced at £15,000 which is a little pricey and the cheaper Acenta model offers better value for money.

Fuel economy is pretty average, with figures of 42.8 mpg falling behind the efficiency offered by other models. On top of this, the car comes under a fairly midrange road tax band (F). It incurs fairly low insurance premiums under insurance bracket 15. The NOTE, while not a class leader, offers relatively low running costs.
