The Mini Cooper convertible is one of the most popular convertibles in the country with competitive prices and fun handling, but the diesel engine does mute this a little. The car is still a competent convertible that will give the driver plenty of feedback during the journey, and the retro looks are just as good whatever the engine.

PROS:  A convertible that is attractively styled and also able to deliver remarkable fuel performance make the diesel version of the Cooper convertible worth a look.

CONS:  Choosing to go for the diesel engine does increase the noise that can be heard, and the overall driving experience isn't as fun as the petrol version of the car.

Behind the Wheel

Although the convertible is actually heavier than the Cooper with the metal roof, this doesn't affect the car too badly and it still handles well going into the corners. The ride is quite firm, and some people may find that feeling every bump and pothole in the road is a little too uncomfortable to put up with for a long drive. The diesel engine isn't the most responsive, but once it gets going it performs well enough, and can still provide a decent driving experience.

In terms of the performance figures for the car, the diesel engine actually does quite well with a list 0-62mph time of 10.7 seconds. The top speed of 118mph means that it will be comfortable cruising on the motorway and will be operating well within its comfort zone.

Looks & Equipment

MINI has opted to keep the fabric roof for the convertible version, keeping both costs and the weight of the car down. This gives the convertible a traditional look that complements the retro styling, and an interesting chrome strip down the middle of the air intake does add to the look. Alloy wheels are included as standard on the convertible, which does add to the quality look. On the inside, the styling is equally retro, and makes the Mini convertible a very attractive package, even though it may not be the most practical.

Similarly to many other Mini vehicles, many of the most desirable features are to be found on the optional extras list, but the convertible does come with a fully adjustable driving seat and steering wheel for a comfortable driving position. There is also air conditioning and climate control for those British days where it is impractical to drive with the roof down.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Mini has proved itself to be a very reliable car since it was relaunched, and this confidence is supported by the warranty on offer. In terms of safety, although the convertible hasn't been through the Euro NCAP safety tests itself, the version with the metal roof has been and was awarded five stars. The car comes with driver, passenger and side airbags to look after the occupants in an accident, and traction control, ESP and ABS help the driver to ensure that the car is under control at all times.

In terms of the practicality, the space in the back means that it really cannot accommodate more than two people without some significant discomfort, and the boot space is minimal. It is worth noting that those considering convertibles will find the same problem with many of the Mini's rivals, but this is one car where style definitely takes precedence.

Value for Money

The list price for this version of the Mini Cooper convertible is £19,510 which is still very good for a convertible car. Those looking to save money and unlikely to do high mileage with the car may find that the lower cost of the petrol version may outweigh the fuel savings, and its more fun to drive too.

The fuel consumption figures for the diesel engine are certainly impressive, delivering 53.3mpg. The insurance group for the Cooper convertible is quite reasonable, but the resale value of the car is very strong indeed. Buyers will also appreciate the combination of a three year warranty and three years roadside breakdown cover.
