The Mazda6 Tourer might not be the first car that comes to mind considering the fame of some of its well-known competitors. But it is definitely a car which will leave an impression and it is well worth considering. It is spacious, efficient and it looks good.

PROS:  It looks great, it’s practical and economical.

CONS:  Steering can feel vague.

Behind the Wheel

The 2.2 litre SE diesel engine generates around 148BHP which offers more than enough pace, and it doesn’t guzzle your fuel. The handling is decent although the steering can feel a little vague, but there is plenty of body control and whilst it can be firm, the suspension is also up to the job.

Overall the drive should be comfortable for everyone and the driver should find it to be pretty pleasant. The 2.2 diesel is also nicely refined, so despite any rowdy passengers, your journey should be relatively peaceful.

Looks & Equipment

As far as we’re concerned the Mazda6 Tourer is a great looking vehicle which is arguably more attractive than the Ford Mondeo. It looks modern and sporty despite its estate body shape and its interior is just as attractive.

The cabin features an array of high quality materials which look good and feel nice. Whilst some rivals offer a little more space you shouldn’t struggle too much to get comfortable with the Tourer offering more headroom in the back than the standard Mazda6.

The SE is the entry level spec, but it comes with plenty of equipment including daytime running lights, heated door mirrors, push to start ignition, air-conditioning, colour touch-screen and auxiliary/USB connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is plenty of space on offer in the Mazda6 Tourer for the driver and passengers even when there are three in the back. There is also a fair amount of load space, with a boot which can hold 522 litres, or 1,632 litres with the rear seats folded flat which adds to the practicality of the Mazda6. Whilst that isn’t quite as impressive as the Mondeo estate’s load space, it is still one of the best in the class.

There shouldn’t be many problems when it comes to reliability concerning the Mazda6 Tourer due to the fact that Mazda has a strong reputation for making cars with a good build quality. The Mazda6 is also built in by the Japanese, who have a good reliability record.

The safety equipment on offer with the Mazda6 Tourer is ample, and it doesn’t come at any extra cost. It includes front, side and curtain airbags as well as some hi-tech equipment, such as the emergency auto-brake which automatically stops the car if there is a low-speed collision imminent and radar cruise control which keeps you a safe distance from the car in front of you on the motorway.

Value for Money

At £22,545 the Mazda6 Tourer 2.2 SE diesel can seem quite pricey when you compare it to its Hyundai and Ford rivals, but it is by no means the most expensive car in its class. It also offers good running costs thanks to its excellent fuel economy which sits around 60mpg; impressive for such a large car.

Overall, the Mazda6 Tourer offers superb value for money.
