CarSite Verdict:  3.25/5
The Honda Civic 1.4 i-VTEC SE-T 5dr is a very good car indeed, the only blot on its copybook being the slightly asthmatic 1.4-litre engine. The space in the back is a little cramped too but the Civic offers plenty of practicality, good looks and refinement and is a convincing alternative to the Golf and the Focus.

PROS:  Spaceship looks, rock-solid reliability, good fuel economy

CONS:  Underpowered, rear seats are a bit tight, isn't as fun to drive as a Focus

Behind the Wheel

The Honda Civic 1.4 i-VTEC SE-T 5dr develops 99bhp and 93lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0-62mph thime of 13.4 seconds and a top speed of 116mph. The 1.4-litre engine in this Civic is a little underpowered and the car feels sluggish and heavy.

Handling wise, the Civic is a bit of a disappointment. The ride is unbelievably firm but don't expect this to make it superb through the corners. The steering is a little numb and wooly and the Civic is nowhere near as good to drive as the Ford Focus.

Looks & Equipment

The Civic looks great thanks to unqiue styling features such as the triangular exhaust pipes and the front Honda badge which is concealed behind a perspex cabinet.

Standard equipment includes electric mirrors, electric windows, CD player with MP3 connectivity and sat-nav. Bluetooth connectivity is unavailable as are rear parking sensors and cruise control. Metallic paint, however, is a £490 option.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Civic scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests thanks to an impressive array of safety kit.

In terms of reliability this car is covered for three years, or for 90,000 miles, which is more generous than other small family cars such as the Ford Fiesta, which only offers 60,000 miles under warranty.

This car has a good amount of boot space. The boot space when the rear seats are upright is 477litres, and when the rear seats are folded there is a spacious 1210 litres, which is good for a medium sized family vehicle.

Value for Money

This Honda Civic 1.4 i-VTEC SE-T 5dr is a good medium-sized family vehicle, and is available from £17,490 which is very reasonable.

You should get 52.3mpg on the combined cycle which is very good for a petrol-powered car and low CO2 emissions of 129g/km put the Civic into VED band D. Group 8 insurance should also be very affordable.
