For a small family hatchback, the Fiat Punto Evo Active 1.3 MultiJet offers adequate levels of performance and low running costs. This is a good, reasonably priced car for a small family.

PROS:  Low insurance premiums, rock-bottom road tax costs, good fuel economy

CONS:  Acceleration is a little sluggish and the model is a bit low on standard kit

Behind the Wheel

The 1.3-litre diesel engine offers a decent power output of 75 bhp at 4000 rpm with 140lb-ft of torque. This gives the car a fairly adequate top speed of 103 mph but unfortunately acceleration is a little sluggish with the car taking 13.6 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph.

The engine of the Punto Evo is quiet and unobtrusive. Noise from the road and wind is audible but not excessive, making the overall experience fairly smooth and refined.

The seats and steering column offer plenty of adjustment to ensure that drivers and passengers attain high levels of comfort although unfortunately the leg room in the back is cramped, making long journeys uncomfortable for adult passengers.

Looks & Equipment

With a sleek and sophisticated exterior, the appearance of the Punto Evo is one of its main selling points and even the inside of the car is well organised and attractive.

Even this basic model of the Punto Evo comes with a range of standard equipment including power steering, central locking, stability control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, Bluetooth connectivity and an advanced stereo system with MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Punto Evo offers a great range of standard safety and security features. Driver and passenger airbags are all fitted as standard with stability control added to improve handling and a fitted immobiliser helping to deter thieves. Front side airbags incur an additional charge of £300 on this model.

Unfortunately, the reliability is considered fairly average with mixed opinions received from owners.

The boot offers a decent 275 litres of storage space with the seats in position, with 1,030 litres available with the seats down.

Unfortunately, this entry-level Active model does not come with split-folding rear seats.

Whilst there is limited leg room in the rear, it is still possible to reach the full five adult seating capacity although adults will not be comfortable in the rear seats on longer journeys.

Value for Money

Overall, the Punto Evo Active 1.3 MultiJet is a good car which delivers average performance at a relatively low purchase price of £12,400. This is cheap for a small family car and with low insurance premiums (under insurance bracket 10) the car shouldn’t be expensive to maintain either.

Road tax is also cheap, falling under tax band B thanks to strong green credentials provided by ultra-low carbon emissions of 108g/km. As these savings are combined with a high fuel efficiency of 68.9 mpg, running costs are low.

However, with upgraded trim levels offering additional comfort and safety features with the same level of performance buyers may be tempted to opt for one of the pricier models.
