The C5 Tourer is an estate car that delivers many of the features that people will expect from a Citroen, with the ride quality and comfort for passengers being particularly important. For those who are planning on keeping the car for many years, the poor resale value may not be too much of a problem, but the running costs may be an issue for those who are looking for the most efficient diesel engine available.

PROS:  The engine works well and delivers the right performance for the vehicle, and the ride is comfortable and the cabin is refined and fitted with some very good features.

CONS:  The driving experience is not the best available in the class with the cluttered dashboard a particular problem, and there are more efficient engines available from rivals.

Behind the Wheel

The driving experience for this particular Citroen is reasonable enough, but does suffer because of the soft suspension. The handling is a little bit floaty and doesn't deliver a lot of feedback through the wheel, but in its defence the C5 Tourer does respond quickly to the guidance from the wheel. The ride itself is very comfortable because of the soft suspension that is typical of the Citroen range, and the cabin is refined and quiet while on the road.

In terms of the performance of this 2.0 litre diesel engine is perfectly adequate and responds well to the accelerator, and is able to go from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. The top speed of the car is 130mph, and this combination of speed and acceleration means that even those who are demanding about their family vehicles will have plenty of power. The one troubling issue is that the information displayed in the dashboard is not as clear as it might be.

Looks & Equipment

Considering that the C5 is an estate car, it is quite a good looking vehicle with some nice sleek lines, and the Citroen logo being included into the shape of the bonnet is certainly a nice touch. Nonetheless, the C5 Tourer is a car that will be of more interest to people because of its practical applications rather than the looks, but it is one of the better looking cars in the class.

One of the best pieces of equipment included with this version of the C5 Tourer is that it has laminated glass included as standard, and this feature makes the experience within the cabin much quieter and more enjoyable. Rain sensing wipers is a nice feature that has been becoming more commonplace in many cars, and there are also a few gadgets such as Bluetooth connectivity and a rear parking sensor included as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The C5 Tourer has been given five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, and particularly noteworthy was the inclusion of safety assistance features. The adult safety rating was at 81%, which isn't a leading result in its class but is still a good score. The full range of airbags including curtain and driver's knee airbags only help to make the car a safe vehicle to drive, and features such as ESP, ABS and traction control all help to make the car safe for drivers and passengers alike.

The usual range of security features are included with the car, and the secure spare wheel and laminated glass both mean that the car is secure. The interior of the car is spacious and comfortable for passengers, and when the back seats are folded flat there is an awful lot of load space available.

Value for Money

The hefty outlay for this car is £27,955, which isn't the most competitively priced estate in this class, and one particular concern for many drivers will be the depreciation that is particularly seen with the Citroen C5 Tourer. The average mpg of 55.4 miles is also a reasonable performance, but there are other estate cars that can offer better fuel performance.

On the positive side, the insurance group for the Citroen is quite good because of the low emissions, and the car is also delivered with a three year or sixty thousand mile warranty, and also one year's worth of breakdown cover. For those who are looking for a cheaper alternative, it is worth considering the manual gearbox version of the car which is £2,755 cheaper, or looking at the 1.6 litre engine which also performs quite well.
