The C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ is a very comfortable and well-built cruiser. It is a great improvement over its predecessor although it falls short of its rivals in terms of driving dynamics.

PROS:  The Citroen C5 1.6 e-HDi is a very sleek and stylish alternative to the German opposition. Its diesel engine is powerful and the soft suspension makes for a comfortable ride. With low CO2 emissions and impressive economy figures, the C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ is very cheap to run.

CONS:  This version is certainly more expensive than the regular 1.6 HDi model. The C5's handling fails to live up to its stylish looks. The layout of the dashboard is a bit confusing.

Behind the Wheel

The C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ rides smoothly over bumpy roads, making for a comfortable and relaxing ride for both driver and passengers. However, the soft suspension means that the C5 rolls through the corners and feels unresponsive to drive. Although the C5’s steering is direct, there’s little sensation through the wheel. Visibility is also an issue.

The automatic 6-speed electronic gearbox is clunky and vague but this does not stop the C5 from reaching 62 mph in 12.6 seconds and hitting a top speed of 118 mph. The engine offers 110bhp and 210lb-ft of torque. Although performance is hardly electrifying, it is perfectly adequate for a car of this type and impressive considering the car's eco-credentials.

Looks & Equipment

The Citroen C5 looks good on the outside as well as the inside. It has a stylish dashboard with a high-tech digital instrument display. The digital displays are easy to read and are supplemented by a traditional fuel gauge, rev counter and speedometer. However, there seems to be a gamut of fiddly buttons on the ergonomically-challenged infotainment centre console.

Standard equipment on the C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ 4dr includes cruise control, electric and heated mirrors, front and rear electric windows, seat height, rake and reach adjustment, climate control, MP3 connectivity and alloy wheels. Also included are an electric parking brake, fog lights, rain sensitive wipers, dual-zone climate control and automatic lights.

Optional extras included metallic paint (£460), rear parking sensors (£420) and leather seats (£2035).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Citroen C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ has a good-sized boot with a 439-litre capacity. The front seats are comfy while the rear seats have ample knee and shoulder room for three average height adults.

Inclusive standard safety equipment includes seven airbags, stability control, ESP with traction control, ABS and the usual Isofix and belt pre-tensioners. The C5 was awarded the maximum five stars by Euro NCAP. Other safety features include rotating headlights, lane departure warning and hill-start system.

Security-wise, the C5 has a unique feature of locking itself if left unattended for 30 seconds.

Citroen is quickly shedding its reputation as a maker of badly built cars and the C5 should prove to be a reliable proposition. The C5 comes with a 3-year/60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

The Citroen C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ 4dr is well priced at £22,195 and offers considerably better value than its German rivals. On the negative side, depreciation is likely to be steep.

With a combined economy figure of 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 120g/km, the C5 1.6 e-HDi Airdream EGS VTR+ offers low running costs. The car falls under insurance group 21 and Road Tax Band C.
