The C4 1.6i VTi VTR+ offers good levels of refinement and handsome exterior styling. With a relaxing driving experience, the C4 is a good choice for the daily commute.

PROS:  The Citroen C4 1.6i VTi VTR+ has good looks, complemented by a cleverly-designed interior. The materials used are of excellent quality. The car comes with a generous level of standard equipment and the engine is economical.

CONS:  The petrol engine needs to be revved hard for best results and the centre-mounted digital display is likely to divide opinion. The windows have a tendency to mist when the air-conditioning is off.

Behind the Wheel

The C4 1.6i VTi VTR+ offers excellent levels of refinement, with engine and road noise being kept to a minimum. The brand’s famous soft suspension, coupled to soft seats, makes the C4 a comfortable car to drive. The steering feels a little too over-assisted and vague, however all-round visibility is good.

The C4's 1.6-litre engine develops 120bhp and 116lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph takes 10.8 seconds and the C4 will hit 120 mph. However, the engine does have to be worked hard to give its best, compromising the otherwise excellent all-round refinement.

Looks & Equipment

Citroen have recently facelifted the C4 and the Citroen is certainly an attractive car. The buttons and switches on the dashboard are backlit with either royal blue or white and the instruments are well-laid out, intuitive and logical to operate. The C4 certainly feels as well put together as its rivals from Ford and Volkswagen.

The steering wheel is ergonomically designed and the level of standard equipment is impressive. Air-conditioning, wheel alloys, cruise control, rear parking sensors, front foglights, Bluetooth, electric and heated mirrors, and MP3 connectivity are all included as standard.

Optional extras include sat nav (£750), metallic paint (£450) and climate control (£550).

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The rear legroom is a bit restrictive for taller passengers, however headroom is good. The cabin is spacious and the boot capacity with the rear seats up is 380 litres and 1183 litres with the seats folded. The boot has a low load lip which is a plus factor for ease in loading and unloading items.

Citroen have an unspectacular reputation for reliability and the old C4 was no exception - the old car had a total of 10 safety recalls. Although the C4 feels better made than its predecessor, it is too early to tell how reliable it will be and if you're thinking of buying a C4, we would advise you to proceed with caution.

Safety-wise the C4 1.6i VTi VTR+ has six airbags, ABS, EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), EBA (electronic brake assist) and traction control. The Euro NCAP Occupant rating is 5/5.

Value for Money

The C4 1.6i VTi VTR+ is a decent small family car. It has the capacity to carry five people including their luggage. It is relatively good value at £17,750 but depreciation is steep with its value plummeting to £9,950 after a year and £6,726 after three.

Fuel economy is average at a combined 45.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 143g/km put the C4 in VED band F. Insurance is in group 16. The C4 Hatchback 1.6 HDi 110 VTR+ is arguably a better choice; although more expensive, its engine is stronger and more economical.

The C4 comes with a 3 year/60000 mile warranty.
