Citroen C4 Car Reviews

The C4 is a medium sized family 5-door hatchback that sees comfort as the number one concern. It is aimed to compete with the likes of the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf, and although it may not offer the same driving experience, it does offer a comfortable, well refined ride that is almost unrivalled. There are six engines to choose from in total, three petrol offerings (a 1.4 litre and two 1.6 litre units) and three diesels (two 1.6 litre options and a 2.0 litre). The range is enough to suit most driving styles with even the weakest engine giving a decent level of performance and all giving very reasonable economy.

Citroen C4 Overview

The comfortable ride is where the C4 really excels. Citroen have always had a reputation for offering a smooth ride that evens out potholes and bumps, and this car remains true to that. This does have some impact on the handling, which is not as sharp as others in the class but this car is marketed as more of sedate cruiser than a nimble hot-hatch. That can also be seen in the refinement, with smooth, quiet engines, and good isolation from both wind and road noise.

Inside the cabin there is enough room for four adults, offering good amounts of headroom for both front and rear occupants, although rear legroom is somewhat limit for taller passengers. The boot is very spacious for the class; at 408 litres it is larger than both the Focus and the Golf with a hatch that allows longer objects to extend into the cabin of the car, between two rear passengers.

The interior is more conservative than the previous model that featured digital readouts and a static centred steering wheel. This conservatism has however been coupled with a step up in class and the overall build quality, with the use of more premium-looking materials. Standard kit is also generous across all trims.

Background

The C4 has been around since 2004, and was launched as a replacement for the Xsara. Through the partnership between Citroen and Peugeot, it is mechanically similar to the 308, which was released a few years later. Initially it was available as a hatchback and coupe. In 2008, both the hatchback and coupe received a slight facelift, which featured a new grille, lengthening of the body and introduction of a new engine.

In 2010 the second generation of the C4 was unveiled in Paris, which was slightly bigger than the original. In addition the coupe version was dropped with the introduction of the new DS4.

Summary

The C4 is a medium family car that focuses on ride comfort and refinement rather than all out performance. This said however, the engines available do offer impressive acceleration ensuring that it is no slouch, even if it has a more sedate image than the competition.  The C4 also received a five star Euro NCAP safety rating.
