The 650i SE is a fantastic car offering electrifying performance and unrivalled interior quality. It's not the most involving car to drive, however, and it won't be cheap to run.

PROS:  Fantastic V8 engine, supercar levels of performance, comfortable and classy interior

CONS:  Hugely expensive to buy and to run – the diesel engine is much more efficient. The car always feels quite heavy.

Behind the Wheel

The 650i SE's 407bhp engine churns out 442lb-ft of torque at 1750-4500rpm and propels the car from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.

The 8-speed automatic gearbox makes acceleration effortless and smooth, but at low speeds the ride is quite firm. The car has great grip and with the optional Adaptive Drive in Sport mode, there is virtually no body roll. It is a heavy car though and the handling is not particularly responsive.

There is a fair bit of road noise at high speeds but very little noise from the wind or the engine.

Looks & Equipment

BMW really know how to make a car feel luxurious and the 6 Series' cabin is extremely well put together and tastefully appointed. All of the materials used feel of a very high quality.

This SE coupe comes with heated leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 6 Series should be a very safe car thanks to a plethora of safety features and driver aids.

There is plenty of space up front but the rear seats are only really suitable for children. The boot, however, is a decent size at 460-litres and there is also a ski flap on offer which makes loading long, thin items incredibly easy.

BMW are renowned for making very reliable cars and the 6 Series comes with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Value for Money

The 650i SE is pricey at £67,340 and running costs will also be high. It'll return 26.6mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 246g/km mean it falls under high cost VED band L.

The diesel engined 640d is still incredibly fast and powerful, but has much lower running costs and better efficiency so is much better value for money. The SE trim comes with everything you would expect to be in the cabin of an upmarket BMW and is much better value than the more expensive M Sport trim, as the only extras you get are some exterior details and sport suspension.
