MPG: 36.7

CarSite Verdict:  4/5
The 640i has a fantastic engine and astonishing performance credentials. It's also much better looking than the old 6 Series and has a very comfortable ride. However, it's pricey and the running costs are a little high.

PROS:  Great engine, good looks, luxurious interior

CONS:  Limited rear space, high running costs

Behind the Wheel

The 640i SE has a 320bhp engine delivering 332lb-ft of torque at 1300-4500rpm and reaches 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

At low speeds the ride is quite firm, although it does improve when driven faster. The car has great grip and with the optional Adaptive Drive in Sport mode, there is virtually no body roll. It is a heavy car though and the handling is not particularly responsive.

Although there is some road noise from the wide tyres, wind noise is hushed.

Looks & Equipment

The 6 Series has an incredibly luxurious cabin which is well made from very high quality materials.

The SE comes with heated leather seats, metallic paint, power steering, stability control, cruise control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo, MP3 connectivity, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation and Bluetooth as standard.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

BMW have an excellent reputation when it comes to reliability and the 6 Series is offered with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Although the 6 Series has yet to be tested by Euro NCAP, it is fitted with a raft of driver aids and safety features and should prove to be a very safe car.

Whilst the 6 Series features spacious front seats, the back seats are quite tight and will fit children with no problem, but will not accommodate adults for long periods without considerable discomfort. The boot is also fairly sizeable with 460 litres and a ski flap on offer.

Value for Money

The 640i SE is priced at £59,565 and running costs will be similarly high. You'll struggle to top 36mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 179g/km put the 640i into VED band I.

The petrol engine eats up a lot more fuel than the diesel version, but still has a lot of power. The SE comes with everything you could need in the cabin and is much better value for money than the M Sport trim.

The 6 Series should depreciate slowly as BMWs are renowned for their strong residual values.
