A zebra which had escaped from a circus tried to give the authorities the slip when it used its marking to blend in with its surroundings.

The zebra was photographed standing motionless in the middle of the road in Bitburg, Germany, following its escape attempt.

Police officers were reportedly confused when the zebra appeared to wander into the middle of the road and then promptly disappear.

But although this seems highly unlikely, the police said that it took them several seconds to realise that the circus performer was indeed standing in the middle of the road.

The zebra was recaptured and returned swiftly to the circus.

"Everything went smoothly in the end," a police spokesperson told German newspaper Bild.
