A quarter of women admit to avoiding parallel parking -- twice the rate of men -- a new report from the AA has revealed.

By contrast, only 11% of men admitted they were not confident about parking between two parked cars.

Overall, around one in six drivers admitted to lacking confidence in their parking skills, while one in five said that they had changed their journey plans in order to avoid parallel parking.

A quarter of all drivers said that they avoid certain roads completely as the parking situation is too difficult, while nearly a third admitted to avoiding certain car parks for the same reason.

AA Driving School managing director Jim Kirkwood said: "Parking problems are causing a needless headache for a big proportion of UK drivers.

"Avoiding certain roads and car parks because you don't think you have the skills to park in them, let alone changing plans at the last minute after a parking drama, highlights a skills gap that can easily be addressed."
