Volkswagen has revealed a facelifted version of its Polo ahead of the car's debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

At first glance, the new Polo looks broadly similar to the outgoing model; however, on closer inspection you'll find a redesigned front bumper and grille, with a chrome line separating the front fog lights, while at the back you'll find a new rear bumper and new rear lights. LED headlights are also available as an option, and buyers can choose from five alloy wheel designs.

The biggest changes, however, are under the bonnet. Volkswagen has completely overhauled the Polo's engine range, offering fuel economy improvements of up to 21 per cent over the old units.

There are two new 1.0-litre three-cylinder units, with either 59bhp or 74bhp, and two 1.2-litre four-cylinder units with 89bhp or 108bhp. The 1.4-litre petrol with cylinder deactivation is carried over from the existing line-up, but with power increased by 10bhp to 148bhp.

The diesel-powered Polo BlueMotion has also been replaced by a new petrol-powered model, which will return 68.9mpg on the combined cycle and emit just 94g/km of CO2 thanks to its turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine which develops 89bhp.

Two new three-cylinder 1.4-litre diesels will also be available, offering either 74bhp or 89bhp. A range-topping Polo GTI hot hatch will be available from next year.

All new Polos will be equipped as standard with an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System which automatically brakes the car after a collision to reduce the likelihood or severity of a second impact. A driver alert system and city braking are available as options, as is automatic cruise control.

A new suspension system called Sport Select is also on offer, using electronically-controlled dampers to switch between suspension settings. The new Polo also gets the same infotainment system fitted to the Golf.

Prices are yet to be confirmed; however, Volkswagen claims that more details will be released when order books open in April. The first customer deliveries are expected in late July.
