The Volkswagen Jetta has clinched the top prize in The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year awards.

In addition to claiming victory in the under £25,000 purchase price class, the Volkswagen Jetta Sport 2.0-litre TDI DSG also secured the overall title after undergoing extensive towing tests conducted by The Caravan Club at the Millbrook Testing Ground in Bedfordshire.

30 vehicles were rigorously tested on their towing ability, acceleration, braking, and ability to handle demanding hill starts as well as being assessed on practicality for everyday caravanning.

Upon reaching the conclusion that the Volkswagen Jetta 2.0-litre TDI DSG was top dog, the judging panel's findings were that, "This car is as controlled as it is quick, offering stable towing both at speed and while driving around hills and bends. It steers smartly and accurately with little body roll, yet offers a well-damped ride even with a lively caravan on the back. It zooms up hills, stops on them securely and pulls away cleanly. And when you're not driving it, it's great to look at."

The Volkswagen Jetta 2.0-litre TDI DSG is powered by a turbo diesel engine producing 138bhp and 236 lb-ft at 1,750 rpm, mated to a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

In addition to the Jetta's overall victory in The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year awards, its Volkwagen stablemate the Touareg Escape 3.0-litre V6 TDI achieved a double victory by emerging victorious in the over £32,000 category and the all-wheel drive over 1800kg category. Its 242bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine and 8-speed automatic gearbox give the Touareg a torque output of 236 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. With Volkswagen's 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, raised suspension, and centre and rear differential locks, the Touareg has an overall 3500kg towing capacity.
