Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda are recalling a total of 3.4 million cars after identifying a fault with the cars' airbags.

Toyota, which is recalling 1.7 million cars worldwide, claims that the affected vehicles have a defective part which "could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash."

Honda is recalling 1.13 million cars globally, Nissan almost 500,000 and Mazda 45,000.

In total, around 150,000 UK-registered cars are affected, including 76,000 Toyotas, 60,000 Nissans, 15,000 Hondas and around 2,000 Mazdas.

UK models affected include the Toyota Corolla and Yaris, the Honda Civic, CRV and FR and the Nissan X-Trail, Patrol, Almera, Almera Tino, Terrano II and Navara.

The problem was uncovered after Toyota received five separate reports of the fault; however, a spokesman from the firm claims that there have been no complaints from UK owners and nobody has been injured as a result of the problem.

The companies say the defective part was supplied by parts maker Takata Corp.

All four carmakers have announced they will replace the defective parts for free and will notify customers over the next thirty days.
