A Ford GT40 used by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans has been sold for $11 million at a car auction in California.
This makes it the most expensive American car ever sold at auction.
The GT40 is finished in the iconic Gulf racing colours, and was used as a camera car during production of the 1971 racing film Le Mans. On top of this, it was also driven for real at the 24 Hour race at the hands of F1 driver Jackie Ickx.
The GT40 has an illustrious past. In the 1960s, Ford was poised to buy Ferrari; however, at the last minute, Enzo Ferrari had a change of heart and pulled out of the deal. Enraged, Henry Ford II decided to build a car which could take on Ferrari and win. The GT40 then went on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times.
Despite now holding the record for the most expensive American car ever sold, the GT40 is, in fact, no such thing. Although it used an all-American V8, the important steering and suspension gubbins was European-designed.
