With weather forecasters predicting another harsh winter, Skoda is offering a range of winter tyres.

Research has shown that winter tyres should be more effective than normal tyres for 147 days of the year. This is because when the temperature drops to below 7 degrees centigrade normals tyres lose their flexibility and when that happens, the grip of these tyres is reduced, meaning that stopping distances are longer and safety is compromised.

The common misconception amongst UK drivers is that winter tyres are only needed for driving on snow and ice. Although the special tread pattern of these winter tyres does increase their traction on treacherous icy roads, Skoda and other car makers are recommending that specialist tyres should be fitted throughout the winter season, when the average temperature drops below the critical level of 7 degrees centigrade. An additional benefit of winter tyres is that they also reduce the risk of aquaplaning - skidding on wet roads - because of the extra sipes which also improve grip when driving in snow.

In order to help entice customers into making the switch this year, Skoda is now offering a range of winter tyres from just £62 each, making a total of £248 for a full set of four.

In addition to seasonal tyres Skoda dealers across the country are also offering their customers a 'Winter Check' for £19.99. The purpose of this is to provide a full vehicle check of all the key systems that will be most important through the winter season. These include checking the lights are correctly aligned, checking the condition of the wiper blades, brake pads, battery and air-con, and making sure that the windscreen washer fluid has the correct antifreeze mixture.
