A Series One Land Rover which was once owned by Sir Winston Churchill is expected to fetch up to £60,000 at auction.

The Landy was given to Churchill as a present from Rover on his 80th birthday in November, 1954.

The car was modified to allow the former prime minister to be chauffer driven around his 300 acre estate at Chartwell, Kent. An extra-wide passenger seat was fitted to accommodate Mr Churchill's not-inconsiderable girth, and a footwell heater was added to ensure that he was comfortable.

After Churchill's death in 1965, it was inherited by his son-in-law, the Right Honourable Christopher Soames. Lord Soames sold it for £160 in 1973 to a Mr Normal Mills; however, when Mills asked for assistance from his neighbour in getting the car back to his house in Orpington, Kent, his neighbour, a Mr Frank Quay, offered to buy the Landy off him for £320.

Mr Quay used the Land Rover for four years before taking it off the road in 1977, having decided that it was too valuable to use.

Despite the Land Rover's advanced age, it has only 12,932 miles on the clock.

Churchill's Land Rover goes up for auction at a Cheffins sale in Sutton near Ely, Cambridgeshire, on 20th October.
