Police in China have launched a rescue operation after a stretch of motorway collapsed into a giant sinkhole.

The 30m-square pit in Changsha, central China, appeared yesterday morning, swallowing a passing car and killing at least one of its passengers.

The sink-hole is next to the Xiangjiang river, but it is not clear whether the road's proximity to the waterway was a cause of the sinkhole.

One rescuer described the sinkhole as so deep, 'we cannot see the bottom of the pit with the naked eye'.
