SEAT has announced that it is planning to expand its successful Young Driver Programme to make it available to disabled youngsters.
From the end of October this year disabled youngsters will be able to take driving lessons with fully qualified ADI driving instructors in new SEAT Ibizas cars equipped with DSG gearboxes and fitted with both dual controls and hand controls. The programme will be open to young wheelchair users aged 11 years and over.
The first lessons will take place in Birmingham, Sheffield and Brent Cross on 27th October, and from there they will then be extended across all of the current eleven SEAT Young Driver centres around the country.
The expanded Young Driver programme has won celebrity support in the form of Sophie Morgan. A TV presenter and former reality show contestant on 'Britain's Missing Top Model', Sophie was paralysed in a car accident 8 years ago at the age of 18. Speaking of the new initiative Sophie said:
"Having had a road accident shortly after passing my driving test, which left me paralysed for life, I wholeheartedly encourage any initiative aiming to help young drivers be better prepared for the road and, accordingly, lower the chance of accidents.
"I also support and actively encourage the enabling of other young disabled people to drive. The independence and empowerment of having a driving licence cannot be underestimated and it is fantastic that SEAT and Admiral are providing young disabled people with such a valuable experience."
The Seat Young Driver programme has already delivered over 25,000 lessons to young people, including youngsters with disabilities such as visual impairment, profound deafness, and autistic spectrum disorders. Participants in the programme take part in a range of activities, such as learning to steer, accelerate, brake, reverse and park within dedicated training areas which include all of the features of regular roads such as roundabouts, junctions and parking zones.
