SEAT are having a double celebration, with the 30th anniversary of the SEAT Ibiza coinciding with the five millionth example of the model rolling off the manufacturers Martorell production line in Barcelona.
The original SEAT Ibiza was unveiled at the 1984 Paris Motor Show, so SEAT are using this year’s event - which starts this week - to celebrate three decades of its most iconic and successful model.
Over the past 30 years the SEAT Ibiza has become Spain’s most exported passenger car, with 75 per cent of units produced being sold outside SEAT’s domestic market. Present production rates see 700 SEAT Ibiza’s leave the Martorell plant every day.
SEAT’s production line for the Ibiza opened the door for women in a traditionally male-dominated environment, and they now account for over a fifth of the 1,600-strong assembly line workforce. Esther García Castellanos, a member of the SEAT Ibiza production team for more than a decade, said: "SEAT has always been a part of my life.
My father was an employee at the SEAT plant in the Zona Franca, and this is the company that has given me the opportunity to get ahead in my career. I have always worked on the Ibiza production line. For me, reaching the figure of 5 million cars produced is the result of the passion we put in every day, the motivation of the personnel and positive proof of a job well done".
In addition to celebrating the Ibiza milestone, SEAT will also be using the 2014 Paris Motor Show to unveil its new SEAT Leon X-PERIENCE model.
