Inept workers at a scrapyard in Coventry crushed a customer's van as he was helping a friend recycle a cooker.

Fireman Ben Forrer left his Citroen Relay van unattended for three minutes as he dumped a cooker for his friend.

However, on his return he found that the van was nowhere to be seen. He looked around the scrapyard trying to find his van but was greeted by the sight of it hanging from a scrapyard crane.

"I shouted: 'No, no, stop,'" said Mr Forrer, "They were looking at me like I was mad. I ran towards the crane.

"The driver put the van down on the floor and looked at me like I was a bit crazy. The roof was crushed in and the windows smashed from the grabber."

Unfortunately, by the time the crane returned Mr Forrer's van to the ground, it was a write-off.

Mr Forrer has filed a £5,000 claim on the company's insurance.

The workers later claimed that they thought it was strange that someone was scrapping a van with four good tyres and a valid tax disc. Quite.
