Land Rover seems to be quite excited about the new Range Rover Sport.
And quite rightly too. Not only is the new sporty Rangey the fastest car the company has ever produced, but also arguably one of the best. So it only seems fitting that following the car's unveiling at the hands of James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, the Range Rover Sport should be entered into a race with one of the most iconic aircraft of all time, the Supermarine Spitfire.
In the video you see below, the Sport goes up against the legendary fighter plane in a Top Gear-esque race at the Goodwood Aerodrome in West Sussex. Basically, the Rangey has to blast down Goodwood's bumpy grass runway at full pelt, do a 180 and get back to the start line before the plane manages to do the same thing.
On paper, the Spitfire would seem to have the Rangey well and truly licked. Its V12 Merlin engine chucks out 1,750bhp compared to the measly 510bhp produced by the car's 5.0-litre V8. The Spitfire also boasts a top speed of 400mph, which is just ever so slightly more than the 155mph delivered by the Range Rover.
Of course, such is the way with these things, the race is a lot closer in reality than it looks on paper. And although we won't spoil the ending for you, given the fact that this is a stunt co-ordinated and financed by Jaguar Land Rover, you can probably guess the outcome. After all, what self-respecting manufacturer is going to let one of its new products get ass-whooped by a machine nearly seventy years its senior?
