A new restriction which has been enforced along a Nottingham road has netted over £240,000 in fines for the council since July 15.
The restriction prevents motorists from turning into Station Street from London Road – one of the busiest routes outside of Nottingham’s main train station.
There are three road signs in place to warn drivers about the restriction, which is in place while work takes place at the station, but it seems that many – thousands to be exact – have either ignored or not seen them.
CCTV monitors have been used to track motorists breaking the restriction, and 4,023 of them have been caught. Each has been hit with a £60 fine, amassing to a whopping £241,380.
Warnings were also sent out prior to fines being issued, the council has said. A spokesman told This Is Nottingham: "When the turning ban was put in place at the end of June, we sent out warning notices rather than give fines for the first two weeks to give drivers using the route fair notice.
"Since this warning period, we have enforced the restriction through penalty-charge notices."
The council has also insisted that the money accrued through fines will be put back into transport projects, although it was unable to elaborate further on exactly how the sum would be spent.
However, the move has left local residents angered. Taxi drivers in particular have expressed their frustration at both the fines imposed and the effect it has had on traffic congestion in the surrounding area.
Mike Eccles, said: "I can understand why they are doing it while the station is closed.
"But I don't see the need to do so after that. It is going to lead to lots of people getting fined."
Mohammed Mahirban, another taxi driver, had this to say: "It gets really busy from the roundabout at the end of London Road because of it. This is especially so on Fridays."
This is not the first time in recent weeks that Nottingham residents have shown anger towards the decisions of their council, following the implementation of the workplace parking levy.
