Nissan has revived its long-dormant Datsun brand with a new budget supermini aimed at developing markets.
The new Datsun Go, which was revealed in a series of teaser sketches earlier this month, is a five-door, five-seater hatchback which will go on sale in India next year with a price tag of less than 400,000 rupees (around £4,400). The Go is the first new model to be marketed under the Datsun brand in 30 years.
Underneath the bonnet the Go is fitted with a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed gearbox. Datsun has yet to release any performance figures; however, it's unlikely that the Go will challenge the cream of the supermini class in the speed stakes.
Datsun claims that the Go is well-suited to the demanding driving conditions found in the developing world. The drivetrain is designed specifically to suit the local environment and the body has been designed to be long-lasting.
On the inside, Datsun has fitted an MP3 docking station -- a clever move as it eliminates the need for an expensive stereo -- and air conditioning.
In addition to its introduction to the Indian market, the Go will also be marketed from late next year in Indonesia, South Africa and Russia. It is unlikely to be offered in the UK where it would ultimately steal sales from that other cheap car from the Renault-Nissan alliance, the Dacia Sandero.
