Nissan have announced a major expansion of their schools engagement program and will look to interact with thousands of young people.
The Nissan Skills Foundation has been running for some time and has already benefited a large number of youngsters, particularly in the North-East where their main plant is based. Sunderland has been the focal point of Nissan’s contribution towards the government’s ‘See Inside Manufacturing’ program.
A competition named F1 in Schools has proved popular by bringing the excitement of motorsport into classrooms; it includes groups of school kids running their own F1 teams and learning the skills that go with it. Apart from racing model cars, they learn about the design, engineering and management required to run a successful team. Sponsored by Nissan, regional entries will create their racing cars in the company’s Global Training Centre in Sunderland, some will be lucky enough to progress into national and possibly international races.
Kevin Fitzpatrick, Nissan’s Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, said: “The Nissan Skills Foundation has been created to inspire the next generation of British design, engineering, and manufacturing talent.
“There are many elements of this wider programme, which will be the focus of our community activity in North East England and will excite many thousands of young people about science and engineering.”
