Nissan has unveiled a new concept car at the North American International Auto Show, a zero emissions small van called the e-NV200.
The e-NV200 concept which Nissan unveiled at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit is a zero emissions electric vehicle based on the popular and award winning NV200 multi-usage vehicle. The e-NV200 is a 'near-future' vision of a fully electric multi-usage vehicle to provide families and businesses with a flexible, spacious interior, combined with a substantially reduced CO2 footprint.
The corporate vice president of Nissan Motor Co. Hideto Murakami described the e-NV200 as "a potential game changing vehicle in its segment," and went on to say that "the battery capacity will support a driving range similar to the Nissan LEAF, while payload and cargo space will offer the same level as the current NV200. The production version would be targeted mainly at businesses, but also at private users or families in major regions."
Although the e-NV200 is built on the foundation provided by the production model of the NV200, which won the 2010 International Van of the Year award, it also takes part of its external design inspiration from the Nissan LEAF Electric Vehicle. The wide bonnet features a large central charging point door, and the front headlights include LED illuminated accents. Large front windows and a long rear greenhouse, combined with a pair of large glass roof panels, provide an open feel to the interior.
Inside the e-NV200 are blue coloured accents, and an advanced telematics and flat C-cluster display with touchscreen, designed to look like a tablet computer.
The majority of the drivetrain components for the e-NV200 come straight from the Nissan LEAF. The lithium-ion battery provides power to a high-response 80kW/107bhp AC synchronous motor, capable of delivering 207lb-ft of torque. Unlike in a conventional engine, this torque is available as soon as the vehicle starts.
Although the e-NV200 is a concept car and not a production model, Nissan are already conducting tests for a range of NV200 based electric vehicles in order to gain real-world insight into everyday driving use of the cars. This will help the firm to create future production models which meet customers' requirements and can therefore be brought to market.
